Commander in Chief Entry and Winner

I entered two stories in the Commander in Chief contest.

Both stories have now been posted on my FFN account (you can click the images to be linked directly to them), but I actually won an award for Through Their Eyes.

Mental Illness in Stories

So, a lot of fanfics, books, movies, and even shows, add mental illness into their storylines. Sometimes, you'll see real gems that display things absolutely beautifully, and there are many others that do great jobs in this respect, even when they aren't gems.

And I want to start by saying that there are literally hundreds if not thousands of ways to display any one mental illness, so, if you've done the research (or have personal know-how from other means) then generally speaking, there is almost no wrong way to display them.

But there is a very disturbing trend in books, movies, shows, and fanfics. And that's having a very serious story and rather than using something naturally funny as the comic relief they choose to use someone with a mental illness as the comic relief.

Now, I'm the first to admit, when watching Shrek 3 and Sleeping Beauty suddenly falls asleep because she has narcolepsy, I find it hilarious. So, if a story is a comedy in nature and they choose to use a mental illness or anything in that kind of form, that's fine. But when the entire story is serious except the way they choose to display that one person with mental illness, it no longer is, instead it's degrading and disrespectful.

Now I'm not writing this to point fingers, so I'm not going to say specific stories, but there are a lot out there (and I don't just mean fanfiction, it happens in everything).

So please, if you choose to write about illnesses like Narcolepsy, Tourettes, OCD, etc that you show them in the correct light, because Tourettes is far more than just a swearing disease, anxiety disorders are not just an excuse to avoid things but can actually be truly debilitating, and so on.

RR Sneak Peek

A brief teaser of Chapter 10 - The Road to Hell:

“I am not turning her. We don't know what will happen if I bite her in her current state.”

“There's no coming back from this, son. If you aren't willing to change her, then it's time to let her go,” Carlisle said gently.

“People have come back from being brain dead before.”

“Yes, there are cases where, a girl after being taken off of life-support and being transported in a jet in a sub-zero cooler to where she's to be buried, somehow wakes up. But those types of cases are extremely rare. And none of them were dealing with someone who was shot in the head at point blank range and then left for dead for days. The reality is, how she even survived till you found her, I'll never know.”

Alice looked away at Carlisle's words, blinking hard. She couldn't physically cry tears, it was one thing vampires simply weren't capable of, but the feeling – one she didn't a hundred percent understand as she had no memories of being human – was still there.

Something Interesting

So this has been circulating facebook, and I think the original image is from either tumblr or reddit, but I know not everyone goes on social media. As a result, I thought I'd share it here, because, for writers, the meaning is profound.

RR Sneak Peek

A second brief teaser of Chapter 10 - The Bottom:

She spoke over her mate, “You. Your kind is making my sight blind. It's why I wasn't able to see the future when we went to Forks. Why my family's future is currently blank. It's probably why that one time I had a vision of Bella in the meadow after we'd left, it disappeared almost as fast as it appeared. It wouldn't surprise me if it's been the reason why I've been unable to get a lock on Bella's future. What are you planning to do? Have Edward turn her and then poison her against us?”

Jacob snorted. “Hardly, even if she was still human... Most of the wolves are not a huge fan of her, and it would never work... Forget about her being a baby vampire. I've seen how volatile and insane your kind are when they're new. My imprint is in La Push and the tribe is in La Push. If she's turned I would have to wash my hands of her. But at least she'd be alive in some form, if she was a vampire. And I may not love her the way I once did, but she's still my friend – my best friend in the whole world – even after all this time.

“As for poisoning her against you, I don't need to. All of you need look no further than a mirror for who would poison her against you. You can't begin to fathom the damage you did to her when you left. She's human, clearly incapable of handling the paid of your kind's mate bond once it was broken by that asshole leaving, but that's exactly what she had to endure.”

RR Sneak Peek

A brief teaser of Chapter 10 - The Bottom:

Alice had been wandering the hospital for a good eight hours or more when her vision of her family went completely black.

For a moment she stilled completely, fear keeping her from churning into action the way she knew she should.

A human – maybe a doctor or nurse – touching her arm and asking her if she was alright had her spinning and racing away from the mere mortal. In that instant, she didn't care if she revealed her true nature to the whole damn hospital.

She was already pretty sure she was going to lose her best friend – her sister in all but blood. She was already losing Edward, with every moment that passed she was more and more sure of that.

She refused to lose anyone else that mattered to her.

She couldn't let it happen.

Alice darted down one hall after another, hearing some startled breaths as she passed by the foolish humans – even though she knew they couldn't really see anything, just a blur rushing by. It would be concerning to her... if she wasn't so worried about her family at the moment. But her family was all that mattered to her.

When she reached the hall that nested Bella's room, she heard it, a voice from just a couple days ago – a voice she never thought she'd hear again.

Incest in Fics

Let me start by saying that, in the state of Washington (and actually over thirty states) the relationships between the Cullens in the original story would legally qualify as incest - to qualify this, so people are clear, Emmett, Edward, and Alice are adopted, while Rosalie and Jasper are supposed to be Esme's niece and nephew, this makes them legally first cousins: in the state of Washington, first cousin relationships are considered incest. We all read twilight, or, at the minimum, watched the movies.

And per wikipedia: Incest is human sexual activity between family members or close relatives. This typically includes sexual activity between people in consanguinity (blood relations), and sometimes those related by affinity (marriage or stepfamily), adoption, clan, or lineage.

So, yes, I have Necromancy in the Fifth, which is an incest fic (and some might argue It's a Twin Thing is one too), but I guess it's not that weird of a thing after all.

Slash Recs

These Recs are freely given without any kind of offer or suggestion from the authors of them, and, as I'm not good at writing personalized reviews, the summaries are directly from the stories in question.

These stories are also from a multitude of sites, including FF.net, Stars, and Twilighted. If any of the authors that I rec'd are for some reason upset by it and want me to remove their story then please let me know via a message and I'll remove it - but as it's free publicity, I don't know why someone would take issue with it.

In honor of pride month, all of these stories are slash forward.

I Wept Not by ArcadianMaggie - Jasper is a war weary soldier burdened by the weight of eternity. Edward is an uncomplicated high school student content to hide his sexuality. Together can Jasper find something to live for and Edward discover some things are worth dying for? E/J Slash AU/M.

Marked by Whitlock-Masen - Edward Masen is a self-sufficient, independently wealthy man with a PhD in Social Anthropology who spends his time exploring whatever catches his interest. When he meets a man named Jasper, he is shaken by the disappointment he feels when Jasper is apparently an impossibility. Slash, OOC

Unconditional by SimplyMatt - Jasper, a single parent for the past five years to Alice-Rose, awaits the arrival of his childhood friend Emmett who is living the life he once dreamed of. Can Emmett help him see that he can have the life he wanted and still be a father, maybe find love.

Secret Letter by Meg Belikov and Nocturnal Emissions - Bella and Alice share the same dance class. What happens when a secret letter is dropped out of her pocket? Rated NC-17 FemSlash Romance/Drama AxB pairing.

Beautiful Disaster by DreamsOfEdward1 - O/S written for FandomForTsunami: Jasper was just like any other 17 year old boy starting his senior year in a new school and a new town, that is until that beautiful green-eyed boy Edward Cullen caught his eye and changed his life forever. Rated M Edward & Jasper All human

Covet by edwardsisobel - What do you do when you meet the love of your existence a year after you marry the saviour of your soul? Edward and Jasper thought they were doomed to a life of longing and regret until they meet someone who holds the key to unlock their future.

Coming into my Own by orchidluv - Bella is too shy for her own good but since moving in with her father, she's got to start standing up for herself. Will the Cullens help teach her that having confidence is a good thing? Bella/Alice Femslash Rated M for mature content. AU

Scorched by LyricalKris - Jasper Whitlock was barely more than a kid. Under normal circumstances, Edward wouldn't have looked twice. He was persistent, though, and he knew how to get under a man's skin. Here was the thing no one told you about playing with fire. It's not that you might get burned. It's that fire has a mind and will of it's own. For FAGE 8.

The Beach House by karenec - Edward knew what he wanted out of life: a career, a wife and children, a home, and security. All of those things dimmed and lessened in importance when he met Jasper, and his world changed forever. Now, things are about to change again. Entry for the Happily Ever After Twific Contest. AH.

-------

And my own: Schrodinger's Cat - Emmett, while completely comfortable with his sexuality, has not been as lucky with the continual foster families he's been placed in. In a new home with the Cullens, he finds himself heavily attracted to the mysterious youngest sibling. But is everything as it seems?

Rebirth and Affliction Sneak Peek

Normally I try to limit my chapter teasers to two at most, but as Chapter 17 - Alliance is writing so slowly, I am posting a third to assure everyone it still is being worked on:

“So, a little birdy told me you were going to be coming here to help, but I was sure the birdy was wrong. After all, my Beau ran off to Tijuana after threatening me because I kissed him, and I'm certain if he'd decided to come back, he would have told me by now.” She was angry and hurt – beyond obvious from her words and her voice.

I flinched. “I'm sorry, Jules.”

“You don't have anything to apologize for. She knew exactly what she was doing,” Edythe said though gritted teeth.

“Get out of my head!” Julies snapped, turning her glare on Edythe.

Distracted

I'm almost halfway done with this chapter of Rebirth and Affliction but pretty things and such keep happening

Sunday, June 9, 2019

Quote of the Day

"Holly, I'm like a cat. I'm very good at climbing trees, and then the minute that I get up there I don't know what to do. Like none. I have no idea what to do. I want to get down but I don't know how to to do that, so I create an emergency situation to get out of it."
"Of the tree?"
"Of relationships."
"Ah. Yeah, I used to be like that, but it turns out I didn't like men."
"Oh, I don't think I like men either."
"I mean I'm a lesbian."
"Oh. I mean I hate people."

Rebirth and Affliction Sneak Peek

A brief second teaser of Chapter 17 - Alliance:

“Sarah stopped by earlier today, while you were with Archie picking up the... truck.” I still wasn't at all certain about the over-the-top Lincoln. “The wolves are planning on making a trip to Seattle, the amount of destruction our kind is wreaking in Seattle is too much for them to ignore. Sarah asked me to go help them as I have some practical knowledge which none of them do – at least according to her.”

“And you're planning on going.”

It wasn't a question, but I answered, anyway. “I owe Jules a lot. You know I do. Besides, she's my friend. That's reason enough on its own for me to go and try to help.”

“Why do you insist on putting yourself in danger?”

“What would you do in my shoes if it was someone your cared for as a friend... as family?”

“I wouldn't do something if it was against your wishes, Beau. But you're going to go no matter what I say.”

I opened my mouth for a moment before closing it and walking over to the wall of glass, looking outside. “If you really don't want me involved, I won't go, but what's happening in Seattle has the potential of affecting us and you know it. If it gets much worse the Volturi will get involved. And with how close we are to there...”

Edythe sighed. “It's sort of a lose-lose situation no matter what. If we get involved and the Volturi show up afterward – especially if we don't take care of all the newborns – then they may say we caused more harm than good.”

“But if we don't get involved, they will show up eventually for sure. And then...” I shrugged. “They know we live here. They know the wolves live here... Three birds one stone.”

“I know. Like I said, we're potentially damned either way.”

“There are ten wolves, and they are built to kill our kind. Maybe with a bit of advise on how to kill newborns, and a little extra help, they can take care of the problem in Seattle.”

Book Highlight

So I've mentioned before that I'm a huge supporter of the LGBT community and since this is pride month, I thought I'd highlight a favorite slash author of mine.

And that is Garrett Leigh.

For people who don't know who Garrett Leigh is, she's a slash author with possibly some of the best books I've ever read, both slash and non. She's written and published a total of 30 full-length stories, with a 31st coming soon, and 6 shorts.

There isn't even one of them that's bad in my mind.

In some ways, I don't know where to start when it comes to talking about her writing. I suppose though, I should start with the beginning. Her first book ever was Slide, which went on to have two more stories and three shorts (Rare and Circle; Marked, Freed, and Air). The series, called Roads, is about Pete, an emt, and Ash, a tattoo artist. And the series shows they're journey to finding each other and, more importantly, keeping each other. The original books in this series have recently undergone an overhaul to re-finesse the finer details in her first books. I've read both versions and they're both good.

Her most recent book is Kiss Me Again which literally came out today (as such, I haven't finished reading it yet... about halfway through, paused to write this). It deals with Ludo, who has bi-polar disorder, and Aiden, an arborist (a tree doctor), and their budding relationship which starts out in the hospital. It is truly a beautiful story with dozens of feels and so far I am greatly enjoying the read.

Honestly I could go through every one of her books and praise them all and truly believe people should read all of her stuff. But, if I was to recommend just three, those would be:

Finding Home, which is her only YA book, and I think because of the fact that it is YA, it's truly a measurement of how good of an author she really is, because it is just as captivating (if not more) as all the rest of her books.

The second one would be Only Love. This book is the ultimate testament of emotional pain and feels and is probably one of the most beautiful books I've ever read.

Finally, the third one I'd recommend is Misfits, which may not be for everyone as it is a polyamorous story, but I truly believe it shows a beautiful tale of the ability to love more than one person and how sometimes three people in a relationship can truly be feasible.

Check It Out

So (because I don't have enough on my plate already 😎) agreed to take on the role of a reporter for TwiFandomNews a few weeks ago and my first interview was finally posted.

Where Is?

Where's my updates, you ask. I wanted to have chapter 17 of Rebirth and Affliction out by now (like a week ago, actually), but unfortunately the muse and I aren't talking. And when I say the muse, I'm talking my inspiration, my desire to write.

And it's about more than just Rebirth and Affliction. The words just aren't flowing for anything I write at the moment. To put this into perspective, normally when the words are flowing, I can put out an easy 1000 to 1500 words in an hour, however I recently finished a 2k one-shot that took me a week and a half to finish.

I know a lot of my readers want another chapter of one story or another, and I want to get them to you, but the one thing I really don't want to do, is put out subpar work. If I write something and I post it, I need to be able to accept what I'm posting, and the stuff I'm putting down at the moment just isn't acceptable to me.

My goal at the moment is to try and get a chapter of something out by the end of the week, hopefully that will be Rebirth and Affliction, but I can't promise it.
