  • Creepy Hollow Series by Rachel Morgan (9 books and 3 novellas)
  • The Hollows Series by Kim Harrison (14 books, 2 novellas, 7 shorts, and 2 graphic novel prequels {Blood Work and Blood Crime})
  • Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter Series by Laurell K. Hamilton (26 books, 8 shorts, and 1 graphic novel prequel {The First Death})
  • Jane Yellowrock Series by Faith Hunter (13 books, 1 novella, 1 novelette, 25 shorts, and 1 spin-off series [Soulwood] with 4 books)
  • Walker Papers Series by C.E. Murphy (9 books, 2 novellas, and 5 shorts)
  • Mercy Thompson Series by Patricia Briggs (11 books, 1 novella, 1 short, 1 graphic novel prequel {Homecoming}, 1 graphic novel spin-off {Hopcross Jilly}, and 1 spin-off series [Alpha & Omega] with 5 books)
  • Kate Daniel Series by Ilona Andrews (10 books, 7 novellas, and 2 spin-off series [World of Kate Daniels and The Iron Covenant) with a total of 2 books)
  • Kitty Norville Series by Carrie Vaughn (14 books, 2 novella, 5 shorts, and 1 spin-off series [Cormac & Amelia] with 2 novellas)
  • Night Huntress Series by Jeaniene Frost (7 books, 6 shorts, and 3 spin-off series [Night Huntress World, Night Prince, and Night Rebel] with a total of 7 books)
I'm sure that I've forgotten one or two of the longer series that I've been reading, and I still have at least three that I plan to read in the future (Black Dagger Brotherhood by J.R. Ward, Greywalker by Kat Richardson, and Lords of the Underworld by Gena Showalter).

You may notice, all but three of them are supernaturally inclined, and there's a fair mix of Pre-teen, YA, Adult, and Erotica.

It seems, no matter which series I'm reading from, there are some things that happen across the board. Now, I will admit, the vast majority of these are from female perspectives - and this is not done on purpose. The thing is, I really like fantasy, supernatural, etc, and most of those books be the author a male, female, or a duo, seem to be written from the female perspective. Honestly, I love finding books from male perspectives that are in the realm of fantasy (vampire, werewolf, shifter, walker, fairy, witch....) but they are few and far between.

Loss of a mentor/parent/teacher/best friend. It's rare - extremely rare - for a series to kill off a spouse/mate/partner. But the same cannot be said for the background character who helps make the major character. And if the character is left alive, then their virtually written out of the series... Which is honestly too bad, because I could probably read entire series' about those characters.

It brings me to the next bit, the lack of self made characters. So many characters are the way they are (per the stories) because someone else raised them to be that way. Whatever happened to someone finding their own way?

---------

Now then, of the book series listed above, which is my favorite? Ones that are still ongoing (even if it's only an occasional short being released) get more immediate attention, and usually my favorite is whichever series has something coming out soon. (I.E. Jeaniene Frost's next book in the Night Rebel spin-off is set to release in January.... is it January yet?)

Back to Writing

So I've officially sent off my submissions for Babies at the Border, and with that being said I'm getting back to writing my regular stories. I don't have a specified schedule just yet, though my first order of business it to put out some sort of special for Halloween.

Past that, everything else will start coming, hopefully regularly.

Status Update and Music Torture

So, I'm about halfway done with writing my stuff for Babies at the Boarder. Once I'm done with that I will be getting back to writing all my stories on a more regular schedule. I wanted to work on my stories concurrently, but there's a deadline for BatB which I must meet, so it's my priority until done.

In the mean time, youtube is putting me through tearjerker hell with it's song recommendations, so I thought I'd share the pain.

Posting for Blog

I was posting daily, or at least trying to, for the last year. However, now that I've reached the year mark, I'm going  to cut down and just post as I want/need.

There are many reasons for this, but one of the major reasons is that between being a reporter for TwiFandomNews, posting a regular campfire on ADifferentForest, and the writing that I'm doing, I'm having to prioritize. The other major reason is it's just difficult to come up with a daily post.

Thank you for your understanding.

Teaser 2 for Babies at the Boarder

It's been three hundred years since World War III. The remnants of that humanity; of vehicles, electricity, computers, and so much more can be found all around, but the world I know doesn't actually have use of any of that technology.

Three hundred years ago, when World War III ended; after the atomic bombs, mustard gas, and weaponized diseases, there was a matter of a few thousand people left alive.

Over the course of the last three hundred years, the numbers have slowly raised into the hundreds of thousands, mostly thanks to The Shade.

As a child, I grew up in fear of The Shade, the ruling faction that controls not only the government, but the military, education, and even religion. They are what allows the civilized world to exist in peace.

I grew up outside of the civilized world though, and I'm not the only one. My family is a part of a faction of people that don't believe in The Shade's rule. We're the rebellion.

Or at least we were.

Teaser 1 for Babies at the Boarder

Rosalie and Maggie glanced at each other.

Rosalie wasn't sure which of them was actually more surprised that the day had finally arrived. The sign on the building, SWAN SONG FASHION– all shiny and new – was what she was looking at, but it was only the start. It had taken almost a solid two years for her to get a property purchased and the building designed, but she finally had her very own store.

Correction, Maggie and she had a store.

“You going to come inside, or are you two just going to stand outside and admire the sign?” Morrigan asked as she opened the door.

Rosalie glanced at Morrigan, her oldest of six kids. Morrigan was the spitting image of her when she'd been eighteen, but she had her father's attitude. Blunt, sarcastic, and not the least bit polite. Her daughter would be going to off to college to start working towards a degree in law enforcement.

She still wasn't sure how she felt about her daughter following in her husband's footsteps, but she couldn't exactly stop her, besides it wasn't like her daughter was ever going to go into fashion...

No, that was going to be her oldest son.

Rosalie still suspected her two eldest must have had their identities transplanted somehow as kids. After all, weren't boys supposed to go into law enforcement and girls into fashion?

She knew that sounded outdated, but the fact that her Sebastian – with his bleached white hair that was gelled so much that it stuck up, solid black clothing, and nose piercing – was actually a bit of a fashion genius still totally blew her mind.

“Come on, your daughter is getting impatient,” Maggie said.

Rosalie rolled her eyes in exasperation but headed to the doors to go inside her store.

Word of the Day

I found these two words in a book series I've been reading, and though both are words I'd heard before, the series used the 'I don't think that means what you think it means' several times and it made me actually look them up.

Sodomite - a person who engages in anal sex.

Still I Rise

This poem is not mine, but it is a favorite of mine and is extremely well known. In honor of one of the most amazing women I've ever studied...

You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I’ll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
’Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.
Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I’ll rise.

Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops,
Weakened by my soulful cries?

Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don’t you take it awful hard
’Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines
Diggin’ in my own backyard.

You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.

Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I’ve got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?

Out of the huts of history’s shame
I rise
Up from a past that’s rooted in pain
I rise
I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.

Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.

Every Lemon... Ever

So, once upon a time there was a fanmade fanfiction group I was with. I don't remember the name of the group but I was a member of it and there were forums. At one point, one of these forums had a discussion about sex in fanfic. And somebody, oh so eloquently, linked this video. And to this day I get a laugh.

The Big Question

I think it's the question any writer; be it an author, fanfic writer, script writer, etc gets asked at some point.

The big one.

Why don't you write faster?

And let me be clear, I've seen fanfic authors who were posting 5k+ a day and still get this question. So I know everyone gets asked it at some point.

I don't have an answer for anyone but me. And I'm still not sure I can explain it. For me, whether I'm making a post, writing a fanfic, original fic, or poem, or posting something elsewhere I have a few different pieces I deal with.

I won't call them voices in my head, because they're truly not, its more like instinct than anything else.

I talk about my muse all the time, which is, in essence, what inspires my writing. And when the muse and I don't get along, the writing sort of sucks.

But it's not the only thing I have to work with. There's the banner fairy, which is what helps me make my banners and choose what images I post. The prompt angel, which is almost exclusively used for stuff on facebook, but does have other uses. And finally there's the pull, which is my drive to finish something.

Unfortunately these for unique instincts or voices don't often work in harmony, and it's only when they work in that I get the most out of my writing.

Tremors

I don't know why I like the Tremors series, but they are favorites of mine. They're technically listed as horror, but they're more comedy than anything.

And while I haven't watched them in a while... I'm just sort of in a Graboid move.

Random

Across this field, I stare,
Eight by eight
A space of hate.

Two steps forward,
I know my fate.

But move I must
For the fight is mine
Mine to die
And mine to make.

The mimicry to me,
It's almost like a mirror.

A knight of faith,
I know his place.

And with each step I take,
You play with grace.

I loathe you gander,
You despise my gait.

But the next is yours to make,
And so I wait.

Rebirth and Affliction Sneak Peek

A second brief teaser of Chapter 18 - Instructions:

“How does Jessamine know as much about fighting as she does?” Jules asked when she reached me.

“I told you awhile ago to ask her for her story.”

“Well, I know you better than I know her. Besides, you obviously know the story already or you wouldn't tell me to ask her.”

“It's not my story to tell.”

Jessamine came over as we talked – we weren't exactly trying to be quiet in our conversation, so I was sure she heard.

“So you're curious about my past?” Jessamine asked, looking at Jules.

“Only as it correlates to your knowledge of what's going on now. As well as your knowledge of how to fight.”

“Well, in order for me to answer that, you have to understand that my upbringing was far different than that of the rest of my family.”

Let's Talk Veronica Mars

Okay, anyone who knows me well and knows my passion for Veronica Mars, probably could see this coming.

Now, before I go any farther, for those who haven't watched Season 4 (which was released a week ago) and intend to but don't want spoilers, stop now. If you've never watched the show at all but want to and don't want spoilers, stop now. If you haven't watched the movie or read the books and don't want spoilers... well you get the picture.

This is a no holds barred... rant. You've been warned.

I've watched Veronica Mars since it's inception, as I think a lot of true Veronica Mars fans have, and the show has already been very interesting. From the very beginning, the show had a sort of Nancy Drew meets Gilmore Girls meets Sex in the City (for those who don't get those references, in modern day context it's sort of like Pretty Little Liars meets Blue Bloods).

Now, a quick run-down on the major characters: Veronica Mars played by Kristen Bell, Keith Mars played by Enrico Colantoni, Logan Echolls played by Jason Dohring, Eli "Weevil" Navarro played by Francis Capra, Wallace Fennell played by Percy Daggs III, Cindy "Mac" Mackenzie played by Tina Majorino, Duncan Kane played by Teddy Dunn, Lilly Kane played by Amanda Seyfried, and a whole bunch of other, less important characters.

And from the very beginning of the first season you're thrown into a mystery of who killed Veronica Mars' best friend, Lilly Kane. In fact, from the first episode of the show, it is the one year anniversary of her best friend's murder.

The show is set in the fictitious town of Neptune, California. And this town has a Malibu-esque feel to it. It's a town for the rich and richer. And anyone who's not in that very privileged 1%, the town sucks.

Veronica's dad, Kieth, used to be the Chief of police until he fudged up in the investigation of Lilly Kane's murder. By pointing his finger at Lilly's father, he effectively alienated both himself and his daughter, who faithfully stood by his side through it all, from the entire town.

So, in the opening of the first season, Kieth is a Private Eye and Veronica sometimes moonlights for the job, which while not technically legal, is sort of the premise behind the whole show.

Throughout the first season you slowly work your way through the entire cast of characters as to the real who-dun-it behind Lilly's murder, and it isn't until the final episode of this first season that you finally find out who it was.

But I'm getting ahead of myself. Because in that first season, you get to meet four out of five of Veronica's love interest. First and foremost, her ex, Duncan Kane, aka Lilly's older brother.  Throughout the first season you get to see flashbacks to happier days and it leaves you wanting her and Duncan to get back together, or at least it does if you're some uber romantic.

Meanwhile, in the current timeframe of the show, Veronica has a very brief relationship with Troy Vandergraff, while a very minor character in the grand scheme of things, he is interesting, mostly because it reveals the kind of boys Veronica likes, the bad ones.  Their relationship only lasts a few episodes, ending abruptly when Troy steals ten grand worth of drugs and carjacks his own car, using Veronica to try and exonerate himself. Of course, before the end of it, Veronica figures out she's being played and turns the tides on him.

Then comes the good one. And in someways, of all the characters she dated, I feel he got the shortest end of the stick. That's Leo D'Amato, Leo is a cop and for the brief time that she dates him, their relationship is sickeningly sweet. If it weren't for the fact that she kept using him to get access to things in the police station, I'd have wanted their relationship to last. But the truth is, he deserved better than her.

Finally, and most importantly is Logan Echolls, Logan used to date Lilly before she died, and from the very beginning the relationship between Veronica and Logan can be described in one word, complicated. Over and over their relationships has ups and downs. Be it as enemies, uncomfortable business associates (he hires her to find his mom), friends, or boyfriend and girlfriend. And if you are like Veronica (as I am) from very early on you are going to want Veronica and Logan to be together. They are just sort of perfect for each other. And in the first season, you get to see this come to fruition. At least briefly. But like I said, there are a lot of ups and downs between these two and when Veronica accuses Logan of killing Lilly towards the end of season 1, well things get ugly.

After it finally comes out that it is Logan's father who actually killed Lilly and the first season ends with Keith in the hospital, and Veronica at home, alone.

Season two opens with a summer having passed and now, Veronica is back to dating Duncan. Like I said, if you're some uber romantic, this is the pair you're shipping anyways. To the rest of us though, this sort of sucks. But it adds to the melodrama. Which reaches a crescendo rather rapidly when a Neptune High School Bus plummets off a cliff and into the ocean, killing all on board except for one person.

This one person, spends the next several episodes in a coma. And we don't know it right way but this person is pregnant with Duncan's baby. I can't for the life of me remember the character's name, but she is for the most part, relatively minor. She wakes up briefly, just long enough to give everyone hope, before dying. Afterwards, Duncan flees the country with his kid with Veronica's help. And that successfully end the Duncan/Veronica love fest.

The who-dun-it with the school bus is a question that lasts the entire season, and when it finally comes out who it is, your probably going to smack yourself in the head because it was so obvious.

But in the mean time, watching friendships between Veronica and Mac, Veronica and Wallace, and Veronica and Weevil all flourish and suffer in equal measures. For the record, throughout the entire first three seasons, these three are the only people who really qualify as Veronica's friends. Veronica however, being this paranoid, semi-egotistical private dick continues to make these relationships hard. At times you'll probably think that her friends deserve better, at others, you may think they don't try hard enough. But no matter what, you'll want to see them in the show. They just add to it.

Veronica and Logan don't get back together until essentially the end of the second season, and their relationship flourishes in the first part of season 3 only to crash and burn before the end of it.

Season three introduces college,  and with it, Stosh 'Piz' Piznarski. Piz is Veronica's fifth and final love interest. He's a sweet chaaracter and throughout season three you'll either really like him, or, if you're like me, wish someone would brain him with a sledge hammer. Some people really like him, while others really hate him.

And at the end of the third season, which dealt with a campus serial rapist, and a secret club that has illuminati like evilness, you're left wanting more.

But more never came.

Because CW cancelled the show.

Several years later, a kickstarter project occurred and a movie was the result of it. This movie, all 107 minutes of it, pulls you back in. It takes place several years after the end of the show and Veronica is now in New York, getting ready to join her first big law firm as lawyer. The past is firmly in the past.

Until Logan calls, Logan's request for help from her, sends her back to Neptune, leaving behind Piz in New York. And throughout this entire movie, you get to watch Logan and Veronica's flame rekindle and she works to help him discover who killed his wife.

During this movie you get to find out where everyone is except Duncan. Weevil is now married and has a kid, Mac is working for the Kanes, Wallace is now a teacher and basketball coach, and Logan... Well Logan is in the Navy. And may I just say, in his Navy whites, he is hawt.

At the end of the movie, Logan is off for a six month tour and Veronica is moving permanently back to Neptune, returning to her roots as a private eye. I wish this is where the series had ended.

It isn't.

It went on to have two books written by Rob Thomas. Those books were The Thousand Dollar Tan Line and Mr Kiss and Tell. These two books are canonical and actually aren't too bad. You find out what happened to Veronica's mom, get to read a couple of great mysteries, and just get to see character development with the characters now that they're all adults.

But now, this year, we're introduced to season four. And I'll say this, the first few episodes reel you in. In truth, it was relatively well made. It's a slightly darker, slightly more mature, show than what it used to be, but it isn't bad.

Neptune has a serial bomber, and you're once again thrown into the who-dun-it. Amidst this, Logan comes back from his most recent tour and proposes to Veronica. She rejects. Which isn't that big of a surprise. But you get to once again see those beautiful ups and downs that their relationship has always had.

By the end of the season. They get married. And if they'd ended it on that note, I wouldn't be writing this.

Now, before I continue, let me step away from this train. People who know me, know I like dark. It's one of my favorite things. And I don't mind tragedy. I think good stories can have tragedy. But I also believe that character/people who have worked (and I mean truly worked) on finding their happiness deserve it. They deserve the actual chance at it.

So, to watch Logan and Veronica get married only for Logan to die in the final bombing... This is not okay. I am not okay with it. They've successfully ruined a good show. And that saddens me. Because if they continue Veronica Mars - and I can see them doing it, because let's face it, that's what Hollywood does - then there's nothing truly worthwhile to hold onto in the future. For this show, there will never be another Logan.

Quote of the Day

"Kicked my ass is what he did. Embarrassing. Polar bear Shifters are the biggest predators alive, and I let a tiger kick my butt.”

Rebirth and Affliction Sneak Peek

A brief teaser of Chapter 18 - Instructions:

According to Archie, when he'd showed up at Sam's house on the edge of La Push, the newborn vampires were going to be carrying the items that had been stolen from the cabin I'd been staying in.

Which meant Raven was involved in this whole mess, and therefore, so was Victor – almost guaranteed.

It was why we were now all gathered in this baseball field, preparing. I'd tried to convince Jules to not get involved, that it wasn't her fight, but she'd refused to listen.

And now we were all here.

“They shouldn't be here,” I muttered under my breath, looking at my friends – split fairly evenly between wolf and human form.

I looked at Colette and Brandy sitting side by side in their wolf forms – sitting apart from the rest of the two packs, almost in the forest. Even though I was well aware that Colette and Brandy despised me, I knew I didn't feel the same. They were thirteen-years-old, young children caught up in a life they never should have been forced into.

And meanwhile, much closer to me, were the rest; Sam, Jules, Embrianna, Jaelyn, and Leland all either standing or sitting not too many feet away from where I stood with my family - Paula, Sarah and Quilla in their wolf form.

“You were willing to help them when we didn't even know what it was that the newborns were being created for. Now we know. They're your friends. Of course they're going to help.”

“That's different,” I grumbled.

Rebirth and Affliction Mini Sneak Peek

Ten shifters and eight vampires meet in a baseball field...

It sounded like a bad joke.

Then again, it looked like a worse one.

Necromancy in the Fifth Sneak Peek

A second brief teaser of Chapter 4:

“Shes wrong though. I'm stronger than she thinks.” I extended my hands toward him, palms out.

He looked between my hands and face in suspicion for several seconds, not making any other movement.

“Trust me,” I murmured.

It took him several more seconds, but finally he placed his hands on top of mine. I could feel him, the brush of air that made up his ghost, touching my skin. But it wasn't something most understood. It was why sensitive humans described things like cold spots and flutters. They were really feeling a ghost try to reach out to them.

I closed my eyes, bringing more power to bear and focusing it on his skin and feeling his hands solidify above mine.

It took him a second realize what I was doing, but when he did, he gasped and his fingers suddenly wrapped around my hands.

Quote of the Day

"You believe that, Sabrina? Even after what we just saw?"
"Yes... yes."
"How is your faith in the mortal boy any different than my faith in the Dark Lord? And why is your faith more valid than mine?"

- Prudence and Sabrina, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Dog Days of Summer

So, while I'm definitely going to be writing throughout the rest of this week, my internet is going to be spotty (especially during the day) as I'm spending the next several days out fishing with my family.

I'm sorry for any delays in posting stuff that this may cause, but, I'm hoping to start getting into a regular schedule with my writing, and maybe if I can get some chapter pre-written while I'm on this semi-cation then it'll be all the better to help me start sticking to a schedule.

I essentially have six active Twilight stories, and if I can get to where, I'm posting a chapter twice a week, that'll mean each story will be rotating every three weeks. I'm not sure I'll be able to get there, but it's my goal.

Necromancy in the Fifth Sneak Peek

A brief teaser of Chapter 4:

“My brother, my twin, has been dead for sometime now. I have access to his spirit though. The thing is, his body, the one he had when was alive, will be nothing more than bones at this point. On top of that, what's left of the body is that of a boy, and his spirit... isn't.”

Her eyebrows arched practically to her receded hairline, even as her hands landed on her hips. The motion caused me to briefly glance down her withered body, seeing her wrinkly and sagging breasts, as well as the folds of shriveled skin where there used to be considerable body fat.

I barely resisted shuddering aloud as I forced my eyes back to hers.

“If his spirit is not the same age as when he died then you've been a very naughty girl, indeed.” She paused, clearly waiting on a response. But when I refused to meet her gambit, she continued, “Haven't you?”

“I don't know what your talking about.” I barely resisted the urge to cross my arms over my chest.

“Oh? But I think you do. Because if you didn't, you'd ask your parents for help. Soul attachment is dangerous and extremely dark magic.” She stepped close to me.

ArchieVerse

So, this is a weird topic for me, but I just started watching The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. I'm only five episodes in, so I'm not going to review it or anything, but this show is so different from the nineties sitcom, Sabrina the Teenage Witch (literally one of the only sitcoms I've ever watched). It's also different from the cartoons, Sabrina: The Animated Series and The Secret Life of Sabrina. In spite of reading the Archie comics when I was younger, I don't remember Sabrina all that well in them, but I know Archie never had the feeling that this show does.

Chilling Adventures is dark, the connotations are not pretty, and the backing I must assume they're using for the basis of the show is the kind of stuff that brought about the mass hysteria of witch trials (for the record, Salem is hardly the only place to have held witch trials). I think if I had watched this show as a kid, it might have actually scared me - on another note, my parents would have killed me if they'd caught me watching it, not a joke. But now, I'm just disturbed by it. I'm disturbed by the message that I'm receiving from it, disturbed by the fact that it is painting paganism as an inherently evil religion. Even more so because it's not the first show like it. I'm definitely going to finish watching what's so far available. But I don't know if I'll bother to watch the third season when it comes out.

With that said, I'm going to move into Riverdale. I just finished the third season a few days back. And I want to say this. Riverdale is extremely unrealistic. But if you like teenage MELODRAMA, then this is the show for you. In fifty-seven episode, there hasn't even been one that wasn't jam packed full with it. This show also shares virtually nothing with the comics that it's based on. Sure, you get the characters Archie, Betty, Veronica, etc. But that's where the similarities end. I will say, I do like the show, it feeds the same petty part of me that shows like Pretty Little Liars and Gossip Girl did.

And this fall they will be introducing the third show in the ArchieVerse, that show is Katy Keene. So far all that's been shown is the world's most simplistic teaser trailer, but I'm assuming, based on the characters it's going to revolve around, that it will be even more melodramatic than Riverdale is.

Babies at the Border Fiction Compilation

The Babies at the Border Fiction Compilation is gearing up for another year. Last year I wasn't aware of it in time to participate, but I'm joining in this year and will be offering up at least one future-take for Edward/Bella in The Emotional Roller Coaster Of Life (and likely a couple of other future-takes for some of the other pairings).

I also want to contribute something else, though I'm not decided on what it will be just yet.

But I'm far from the only person participating. There are at least thirty-four other authors who have so far joined up with hopefully even more to join before sign-ups on that end have closed.

There are betas and banner makers involved and already more than $300 donated to this cause by readers.

If you would like to get involved in any way please be sure to join the public group for this on Facebook; found HERE, or click the image below.
